A gentle and quiet spirit

We live in a culture that puts too much weight on external appearances. Many people seem to spend lots of time improving their looks, at times in an obsessive kind of way. There are people who will not leave their houses unless they have perfected how they look. There is too much superficiality in the world today. It seems like people look at a person’s external appearances and then come up with a conclusion about that person, even without getting to know the real person behind the looks. Looking good on the outside is not bad, but if that is all that we are concerned about, then there is a big problem.

If a person looks nice and flawless externally but what comes out of their mouth is vile, then really that is an ugly person. The real person is not the body, but the soul and spirit. If we look good on the outside but our actions, our attitudes, and our words leave nothing to be desired, then our external appearances really add up to nothing. The body is mortal and is dust and shall be returned to dust when our time on this earth is over, what will be of significance at that time is the kind of life we lived.

Is your spirit born again of the Spirit of God? Are you taking care of your soul? Do you keep renewing your mind constantly with the Word of God? Do you live for God, or do you live a self-centered life just thinking about yourself, about how to look good, about fulfilling your carnal desires, and about enjoying the pleasures of this world to the maximum?

Our life was given to us by God and it belongs to God. We are to live our lives for the glory of God, because in the end, that’s all that really matters. Live your life in light of eternity. A life lived for God is the only life worth living. What benefit would it be to attain everything that this world has to offer but in the end spend your life weeping and gnashing your teeth in the lake of fire for eternity?  What good is it to look flawless on the outside if your heart is as dark as coal and your life is stained with sin? Work on your soul more than you ever work on your body.

Be wise and know what the will of God is. Stop moving with the crowd and realize that every person will individually give an account to God of how they lived their life on this earth. Do away with crowd-mentally and start pursuing Christ Jesus with your entire being. Do not set your standards based on what everybody else around you is doing, let the Word of God be your standard. Just because everyone around you is doing whatever they are doing does not make that thing right; if their way of life is contrary to the Word of God, then it is not right, and if God calls what they do and say sin, then it is sin. Do not try to explain away what is happening because it is popular; if it is against the Word of God, then stay away from it.

True beauty does not come from our external appearances. The external appearances just complement the inner man/person. If you want to see what true beauty is, then look at a person whose life is surrendered to God, a person who walks by faith and not by sight, a person who lives an uncompromising lifestyle and whose mind has been transformed by the Word of God, a person who does not live in fear but instead places their full trust in the Lord, a person who guards their heart, a person who does not engage in gossip, slander, and other mindless chatters, a person with self-control, a person who lives in total obedience to God and is led by the Spirit of God – that is a beautiful person.

The Bible tells us what true beauty is.

Do not let your adornment be merely outward – arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel – rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror. 1 Peter 3:3-6.

The Bible refers to a quiet and gentle spirit as the unfading beauty, imperishable beauty, lasting beauty, an incorruptible beauty; and this type of beauty is of great worth in God’s sight. Wives be submissive to your husbands, have reverential fear of God, and be chaste in your conduct.

A gentle and quiet spirit is an outflow of our relationship with the Lord, you have to be submitted to God first. Your attitudes, words, and actions will reveal what is inside your heart, and if your heart is beautiful, that will flow outwards and influence your day to day life, and your life shall truly be set apart. You will not live a life of arguments, or a life of show off, or a defensive life, or a life of trying to control those around you; instead, you will be meek and have inner strength that comes only from God. Your life will be a life of total surrender to the King of all kings. You will be at peace and your life shall be an abundance of bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit who dwells within you. Do what is right and do not give way to fear. Rest in the hands of the good and capable Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
